Brit Olam ברית עולם –The International Israeli Jewish Volunteer Movement

Inspiring Leadership:

Young adults are essential stakeholders in all of Brit Olam’s  work. Many of its volunteers are in their twenties and early thirties. Brit Olam’s mission reflects the fundamental belief that service to the community builds self-respect, leadership skills and civic responsibility in young people, thereby enhancing their lives and strengthening their social and cultural values.

Brit Olam’s young Leadership has taken upon itself to advance a wide range of leadership programs in all fields of activities, bringing together talented young leaders and encouraging them to civic participation in international humanitarian endeavors and community development initiatives.

overty is not only economic shortage.  It is narrowing all life possibilities. Brit Olam works together with women to broaden their life opportunities and to break the poverty cycle and its influences and affects. Brit Olam provides women in Africa and South Asia a platform, on which they can physically and mentally heal from past trauma events. We offer supportive networks for women who wish to expand their economic possibilities in Africa.

Caring and Empowering through Arts:

Brit Olam believes that creative arts are a common gift to humankind. The arts perform a valuable role within society to transform, teach, heal, encourage, and empower. When engaged in service to others, the creative arts are functional tools used to overcome crisis and stressful realities, and serve as transformative power to over come barriers of race, class, faith and culture in order to promote holistic personal, family, and community development.

Voluntarism, Tikkun Olam and Cultural Pluralism:

Brit Olam draws its vision and inspiration from the values of modern civil society and from the humanitarian values of the Jewish tradition. Volunteerism embodies the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) through compassion and social action. Brit Olam strives to strengthen bonds between Israelis, Diaspora Jews and people of all cultures and societies, uniting a diverse community of volunteers from around the world. Brit Olam calls attention to the unique culture and needs of different communities, fosters tolerance and promotes cultural pluralism.

Caring for Children and Youth:

Childhood is the most precious time of life. It is the time to learn, play, dream, and develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and mentally. And yet, one out of every seven children in the world does not enjoy a real childhood, not even of the most modest nature. While the world leaps ahead towards advanced technology and economic prosperity, more and more children have to work just to subsist, struggling to survive under the most horrendous physical, nutritional, health and emotional conditions.

Brit Olam is based on a firm belief in the ability of children, youth, families and their communities to bridge social gaps and developmental limitations, and to cope with difficult situations of crisis and distress. Brit Olam  feels strongly that each and every child has the right to have a happy, healthy and secure childhood. In all its field programs Brit Olam’ challenge is to fulfill this commitment.

Advancing Medical Care:

Brit Olam's volunteers; physicians, nurses, and other para-medical and psycho social experts deliver medical and mental aid in emergencies and in their aftermath. Brit Olam , through is field initiatives, provides essential healthcare, supports community based clinics, provides medical and psychological care to marginalized groups such as street children, women raped during military conflicts, and refugees.

Gender Equality and Women Empowerment:

Equality between men and women, entails the concept that all human beings, both men and women, are free to develop their personal abilities and make choices without the limitations set by stereotypes, rigid gender roles and prejudices. Gender equality does not mean that women and men have to become the same, but that their rights, responsibilities and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female. Gender equity means fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their respective needs. To date, in most developing countries, women have not been included as full, equal and effective stakeholders in processes that determine their lives. Women continue to have less access to education than men; they continue to have less employment and advancement opportunities; they continue to be absent from decision-making; and, although they bear the brunt of conflicts. More ever, the majority of the world’s poor are women: around 70 per cent of the 1.3 billion people who live in extreme poverty, on less than one dollar a day, are women and girls . Violence against women is the biggest cause of injury and death to women worldwide. It causes more deaths and disability among women aged 16 to 44 than malaria, traffic accidents or cancer.
